  1. EDIT: There are a lot of passionate NieR/Yoko Taro fans here that seem to be missing the point of the video. This is a story recap of the events as presented in the Game. I am aware there are many lore drops beyond the scope of the game, such as books, interviews, plays, crossovers and concerts, but this is NOT a lore video. This video is only summarizing the plot of the game itself. Like for MANY videogames, there are additional supplementary materials you can check out, but, again, not the purpose of this RECAP video.

Big thanks to the Patrons who selected this, and shoutout to the YouTube Members joining the club! So, whether or not you have played NieR Gestalt or plan to play NieR RepliCant, I Highly recommend you play Automata ASAP as it's a surprisingly versatile game that hits the gameplay/story balance with a slam dunk. This was ALSO a pain to recap, as normally I slice off most of a game and leave just the most important/relevant/interesting/funny/cool parts of a game and what you is a concentrated version that is usually showing off its best parts. NOT here. There are so many relevant/interesting/funny/cool parts I HAD to cut out to fit this under an hour and so while this is a recap I am proud of, there is so much good stuff I left out and, again, recommend you check out yourself. As of right now, this is the longest RECAPitation on the channel at 57 and change minutes. Please enjoy and I'll see you on the next Battlefield.

Next RECAPitation will be: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria

  2. Please excuse this initial comment, as I wasn't able to watch the whole video over my lunch break, but… there are a couple points I wanted to address:

@0:12 – "…almost all of the same management team from the NieR would work on this project, too"
This is a little misleading. If you mean Yoko Taro, Saito Yosuke, and Okabe Keiichi, then yes… Otherwise, it's mostly a brand new team, not to mention this was the first time PlatinumGames was tagged to develop it.

@1:00 – "No canon ending at this time."
In a story in which "all timelines matter", using the term "canon" is pointless. This only determines the specific point along any given timeline a story takes place. As far as Automata following a certain path, this is already known, so I'm not sure why this was even stated. In terms of the game and its surrounding source material, it has a linear path through Ending E with continuation some hundred years later (see the overall timeline).

  3. Some things here are not accurate, and I don't think you were exposed to all of the material, and understandably so. The ending of Nier Automata is not contained to the game. Sadly, there are outside materials that act as the epilogue. This stuff is canon. I do not really like that this was done. However, restricting or reigning in the creativity of Taro could degrade his work. The following was a concert that was only released in Japanese, and did not get much attention from the west it seems. it also wasn't officially translated. I will write a synopsis. Below are the source. Please spread this information by copying and pasting this comment onto other Nier Automata Ending Explained videos. Or editing it as you see fit for easy dissemination.

    The concert performance subtitled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEup1ThfmRA
Here is a transcript I found as well of this, with the direct dialogue in English: https://mintychu.dreamwidth.org/1870.html

    Bad Ending:
9S does upload himself to the Ark. 2B and 9S are repaired by the pods, and 2Bs memories are restored. When 2B is revived, the pods inform her that they have tried tens of thousands of iterations of revival for 9S with no success, and inform 2B to dispose of his body. This is unacceptable to 2B. She goes on a quest to revive 9S, and is later informed by Jackass that the answer might be at the bottom of the rubble of the tower. 2B spends days digging through with her weapon, and does massive damage to her body. She eventually finds an ark component of alien tech, to reverse engineer a vaccine that can revive 9S. She administers the vaccine to 9S.

    Good Ending:
If 9S chose to stay and not upload himself, a message plays back informing 2B that he is just a solider whose purpose was to only fight, and that he did not deserve anything more. He deleted his data permanently. Overwhelmed, 2B then stays in the same spot for the rest of time, next to his body, until her body degrades and breaks down into the natural resources she was made from. The pods stay next to them as well to observe, a call back to Devola and Popula.

If 9S chose to upload himself, the vaccine works as intended. His black box reactivates. The pods are not able to figure out why this worked. They theorize it was unknown variables of alien technology. The pods, 9S, and 2B all concede that they are trapped in a cycle, and that the world is inherently bad and demoralizing. They then also state that even though this is true, giving up guarantees it will always be this way, and that they will continue fighting for a better future and existence.

As the Yorha black boxes are based on the alien machine tech; I personally believe his data on the Ark was in superposition (quantum entanglement) with his black box or the material used to make the repair vaccine, and the alien crystal catalyzed or transmitted his restoration. Superposition might and crystals do function like this based on our real world understanding of physics at this moment, it is called 5D Optical Storage.

  4. The better question is what didn't happen in NieR Automata. We got to see a bunch of doll looking robots have an orgy with each other, but when the androids all got corrupted we didn't get to see no such action with the absurd amount of female androids.

  5. I finished the E ending immediately after getting c and d and willingly sacrificed my save for others before touching any of the then unlocked postgame options. At first I thought I was calling the games bluff. Even as I watched it delete my saves I thought it couldn’t be real.

I will never forget how that made me think about it for a long time. I started up a new playthrougj briefly intending to get there again and actually go back and take advantage of the ability to replay any point in the game and find all the other endings. Didn’t get too far before I just needed to stop… for now. Almost about to go back and finish that second playthrough watching this.

  7. for whatever reason, i didn’t see Emil while playing as either 9S or 2B in my first playthrough and i lowkey feel cheated out of something nice bc of RNG. i skipped the part of the video that went into it but now i have to play the entire game over again to know that part :/

  8. Thanks for the recap, I listened up to 14 minutes now I remember where I was in the game. I'll be resuming the game where I left off and see what happens after that point.
