Xbox Series X Begins Testing Dolby Vision Games – Advantage LG over Sony OLED?

Microsoft has started testing Dolby Vision gaming on the Xbox Series X/ S for Xbox Insiders on the Alpha Ring, with a number of games receiving the Dolby Vision notification with a Dolby Vision-compatible TV.

We explain why this may give an advantage to LG OLEDs (for example LG CX, C1, G1) over Sony OLEDs (e.g. A90J Master Series OLED), due to the ability to play games at 4K@120fps together with Dolby Vision at the same time.

  1. This man is quick. I literally just started reading about the Dolby Vision rollout to insiders and this dude has a comprehensive video up. I guess they call him 2-minute Teoh for a reason 😂

  2. Does that mean you can’t play 4k 120hz on Sony A90J with Dolby vision working? On Xbox series X..Please help..
I’m looking to invest in a new tv and was deciding on A90J or LG G1 evo..But LG G1 evo has no stand..
Will the Sony VRR firmware update fix that by winter 2021?

  3. I just want the xbox dashboard to get a hdr 4k update.
It ruins the magic when going to and from dashboard and the screen constantly goes black and the instant game response notification pops up all the time

  4. @HDTVtest You can actually test the Dolby Vision support on XSX right now. Download the Dolby Access app on your XSX and run it. It makes the Xbox output Dolby Vision picture. And unfortunately, it looks like the console always changes the framerate to 60 fps via HDMI 2.0 when Dolby Vision is active.

  5. I think Dolby Vision for gaming consoles is useless because gaming consoles don't need Dolby Vision, they have adjustable sliders for how bright and how dark the TV can go, the game will then adjust itself to be within those capabilities.

It's not like a movie where the scenes are set to a specific brightness that needs to be met, as a game it can be adjusted on the fly.

  6. Since Xbox does not support 48 Gbps, that means that when playing a DV game at 4k 120, the console will output 12 bit 4:2:2 (32 Gbps), or can it output 10 bit 4:4:4 (40 Gbps)?

  7. I have a question. I have three Xbox series X games that have Dolby Atmos. I also have an LG OLED GX. And have Headphones that are Dolby Atmos compatible. But when I put in a game with Dolby Atmos and I put on my Dolby Atmos headphones I never get the Dolby Atmos tag in the upper right corner of my LG TV! Which tells me that I am not getting Dolby Atmos for some reason. Any idea why that might be?

  8. Waiting for this!

Curious if it really outputting 120 he and Dv

There is a Dolby vision game on pc (battlefield 1). That game only support 60hz

    And does vrr still work!?
I am a beta tester but haven’t the update yet

  9. Other than the obvious benefits dynamic metadata, which should net better perceived contrast in games. I wonder if the games after getting a 12 bit color treatment will be masked as 8 bit to reduce the affect on Ram bandwidth. I'm curious as to what benefits this will net games with ray tracing, as reflections can be brighter.

  10. Ps5 better do this, and soon. Or there is no reason to play any third party games on the ps5. With how their tvs are set up..it doesn't seem like they care about it. I am even more pissed about this than the lack of 3d audio. People have thousands of dollars in speakers and they want you to use headphones to get the best audio…yea ok.
Extremely pissed with Sony right now

  11. I have a strong feeling this sounds better than it's actually going to be in practice. Guess we'll have to wait for that video. I can already see the fanboys claiming how much better the games look while playing on a tv that doesn't support dolby vision.

On another note, I don't see Sony adding this to ps5… it'll be a miracle when VRR comes out, if it ever does. We'll see.

  12. Don't all external devices output player led Dolby vision, even for uhd blu rays? I thought the oppo 203 was the only device that allows you to output tv led Dolby vision. Would love some clarification.

  13. Makes my purchase of a LG CX earlier this week even better. I'm in the beta ring of the Xbox Insider program. Can't wait to get Dolby Vision support.

I will also echo that selecting HGiG is waaaaay better than the TV's built in dynamic tone mapping feature. Gears 5 especially looks incredible. DTM makes the entire image too bright and increases specularity too much. HGiG is far more precise and adjust tone curvature where it should. Besides Gears 5, I can definitely see the difference in Destiny 2.

  14. Good for LG and Microsoft’s Xbox division for offering what Sony isn’t but I wonder how substantively game developers get on board with Dolby vision . If cyberpunk ‘s hdr is anything to go by – I’m guessing not
