Xbox Series X [YCC 422] Setting: On or Off for TVs Without HDMI 2.1?

We explain why it may be beneficial to enable the “Allow YCC 4:2:2” setting on the Xbox Series X for TVs that don’t have HDMI 2.1 support. With YCC 422 disabled, the Xbox will be sending out 3840×2160@60Hz at 10-bit 4:2:0, but with YCC422 enabled, the video signal will be 12-bit 4:2:2.

  1. When I allow YC 422 the picture goes a lot darker and when I try to calibrate the image via the Xbox no matter what I do I can't see the eye on the Brightness screen…It's a shame because the blacks go so black… I'm using an Asus ROG strix XG32VQ btw, just saying…I wonder why?

  2. Thanks for all your in-depth coverage on the latest consoles! One game I wish you'd look into is Destiny 2 because HDR white levels are never accurate. I could never darken it enough to look proper on my TCL, but when I use my PC on the same TV HDR limits are leveled correctly & it looks amazing! It's been like this for several years. Great work Vincent!

  3. Is their a clear significant difference in picture quality between the xbox and a dedicated 4k blu ray player? Say the xbox series x picture quality compair to the oppo 203 or is the or is the picture quality minimal?

  4. Hi i have a Sony Bravia KD-65XF9005 with 60hz max locked ! But when i turn the 1080p and 120hz on the series x on. And tv settings game mode on than i can run 120fps on cold war. I`m just wundering how this works? but it looks so super smooth.

  5. Wrong advice for XBSX and LG CX. If you don't enable YCC 4:4:2 on XBSX, you get YCBCR420 10b TM. If you enable YCC 4:2:2, you get YCBCR 8b TM. The movie is a UHD copy of Blade Runner 2049 purchased on Xbox store (digital copy)

  6. Your videos are extremely helpful. I can get most of my Xbox HDR stuff to look great on my 2018 TCL 6 series, but select games and movies (like Elder Scrolls Online or the movie Cars) do not look HDR with the "Dark HDR" setting on the TV. It feels almost like some sources from the Xbox Series X are being tone mapped too low by the TV. Have you experienced this?

  7. Tried both on my x1x and found the 10 bit 420 looked cleaner. Not sure what the benefit would be of upconverting a 10 bit encoded at 420 signal to 12 bit 422 before hitting your display.

  8. Tried this on my KS8000(US), Allow YCC 4:2:2 with 12-bit on a 4K HDR 60FPS game and looking at the gradient of the sky this caused banding/shimmering and flickering. Seems best to leave Allow YCC 4:2:2 OFF on this TV, but OK to leave it on 12-bit because it seems to switch to 10-bit automatically for HDR games. 12-bit on non-HDR games seems fine without problems.
