Elon was saying that this technology can be used for alot of things like mental health issues and other health issues with the brain as well as controlling things with your mind it could be and I say a big could be a massive leap forward but as you said we do need to be very careful. As for Neuralink, definitely wild and sort of creepy. If only used for silly tasks, there wouldn't be much concern. Just the thought of controlling my lawn mower to cut the grass, hell yes. Eventually it will be used for far more terror or problematic situations. Also the concern of these "linked" devices, machinery, equipment etc, being hacked.
If they could somehow use this tech to help people with chronic neurological pain it would be a game changer. They know that pain is somehow generated by the brain but have never managed to crack how to 'turn off' the pain signals. So far the best available are spinal cord stimulators deigned to simply interrupt the signals sent from the location of the pain to the brain. If you could instead just reprogram the brain in some way. Think of the millions of people this could help.
