How video games helped me come to terms with depression – BBC News

Despite there being an estimated 2.5 billion active gamers around the world, there is a lot of confusion and debate around the effect video games have on our mental health and wellbeing.

Joe, a gamer from Glasgow, speaks about how gaming helped him come to terms with his depression, by enabling him to “confront his personal demons” and articulate his feelings to mental health professionals.

  1. Feels very deceptive and deliberate talking about suicide and financial troubles from 2008 when this is exactly the reality loads of people are now facing right now becsuse of this situation. Why not just be more straight up and make a video suggesting people divert and take their attention over to games like this to help with this current situation?

Using games is like a sticking plaster, it distracts you from reality.. but the moment something else happens in your life like you loose another friend or family member or whatever, you will be cast right back into reality and it will be more painful because you've wasted time playing video games.

  2. Tonight, we received the exact information that Min Aung Hlaing and three warships were sent from Thanlyin Thilawa Army to take over 7,000 Bhagali. I do not post on Fb myself, I do not post on facebook, I just send it back to individuals or groups via msg. No one knows if the prisons will be shaken and the riots will break out. A naval cadet spoke.

  3. Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.
“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted".
    Matthew 23 NIV

You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything, in Heaven above or in the Earth beneath, or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents up to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
"If my people who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sins, and will heal their land."

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

This, then, is how you should pray:

    Our Father in heaven,
    hallowed be your name,
    your kingdom come,
    your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
    And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

    These are the teachings,
The Righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ our God.
REPENT, and start doing what is right.
If you abide my teachings, you are really my disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

A time is coming and has now come, that the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth. God is Spirit, so his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and Truth; they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

In the New Heaven and New Earth,
    only Righteousness dwells.
May the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ our God be with you all.

  4. As an adult I find them so depressing (yet love them equally).
A day spent on a game equals nothing once I turn off the power…. read a book, draw or go running and even when “finished” I have a sense of achievement and feel I’ve bettered myself permanently.

Level up yourself not an avatar. It’s better long term than cover ups

  5. Video games are a great past time in terms of productivity to sanely keep you occupied and engaged with what other things you specifically like but its not the answer in the long-term when there are better options out there in life because you don't want to be sat down always staring at a screen and confined to having a controller in your hand for the rest of your life! Its not really a routine thing a video game you can actually structure in a day, its the moment you think, i need a break now away from everyone so i could do with this!

  6. People 1000 years ago had no video games. How did they deal with depression? Did every depressed person commit suicide then?

Stop classifying people with issues on their minds as being depressed. Face the true problem that is the structural flaws in our society and in our innate animal instinct to compete for/gain control of territory/resources/hierarchy.

  7. I’ve found being a nurse in this pandemic my mind racing. My Nintendo switch has been simple enough for me to get to grips with and entertain me – but also keeps me from the trap of my own head.

  8. I'm glad he found comfort it gaming to alleviate mental health distress. I don't recommend leaving children on there unsupervised with live chat etc, heard some real horrors on there as well as decent sounding folk.

  9. I have been helping isolated friends by encouraging them to online gaming. Up to 8 people in a party chat… It has been a gamer changer for my friends with depression. Also my daughter does not live with me. I spend extra time with her when she isnt with me by playing online games with her. We build worlds, ride along beaches on horses watching sunsets together and I am also teaching her how to become a top class sniper. I have helped her to understand money using game currencies.

One of my fondest memories is playing games with my Dad 28 years ago on the Commodore Amiga.
