Friday Night Funkin’ is a Newgrounds rhythm game made in HaxeFlixel originally created for Ludum Dare 47. Programmed by ninjamuffin99 with a soundtrack produced by Kawai Sprite and artwork created by PhantomArcade and evilsk8r, the game can be played on Newgrounds or played/downloaded for free on Itch.io.

Friday Night Funkin’ is a rhythm game in which the player controls a character called Boyfriend, who must defeat a series of opponents in order to continue dating his significant other, Girlfriend. The player must pass multiple levels, referred to as “weeks”, each containing three songs. Each week, the player faces a different opponent, though some deviate in structure from this via the inclusion of multiple opponents. During gameplay, the opponent will sing a pattern of notes (represented as arrows) which the player must then mirror by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Some songs introduce more complicated patterns, with the player’s pattern sometimes varying from the opponent’s or both singers engaging in a duet.

    People cite this as a reason for not liking Curse because it is a character under the EXE label, which is a horror genre by default. All EXEs are supposed to be iterations of the initial Sonic.exe story which in some way fix the original or take the concept of EXE and expand it. But the thing is they still have to somehow fit into the genre of horror, and Curse just doesn't do that. First off, the only thing that remotely is EXE related is the curse that Curse is inflicted with, but that is where it stops. Curse doesn't kill people voluntarily or consciously like pretty much every other EXE. The curse is making him kill without his knowledge (but then it doesn't work all the time for an unexplained reason). Every other EXE before him has pretty much kill because they either enjoy it or need the souls for some reason. Either way they do it out of their own free will, not because they are being forced to by someone else. The only exception I can really think of is Sink, but that is also heavily contested on whether it is an EXE or not.

    Other than that the story is pretty much taking the source material of Sonic and completely changing it: gender swapping everyone, killing off Knuckes and having everyone blame Curse, taking Tails (who is supposed to be like Sonic's little brother) and making him transphobic for no reason, making Eggman an ally, having them live in an urban city despite all mobians living in natural environments for every Sonic game, etc. There is a lot more to why people hate Curse than just "he's not scary". As much as this song slaps, the character it is for is bad because it doesn't match the genre it was for and the story actively makes these characters unlikeable (but that is what happens when you take a character originally from a gay roleplay and try to make it an EXE artificially)
