Mojang, please stop making the game EASIER. It is good as it is, please take Xuma's idea and make the disc fragment the duplication source. Thanks.
Also, there is a easy way to make the portal tp smoother, as soon as the player go thru a portal:
1. Save the Allay in temp Allay-type variable and despawn the existing one;
2. Calculate the time it would take for it to travel to the portal in a straight line (I think this is good enough);
3. Wait for said time;
4. Spawn the same Allay across dimensions loaded from the temp variable;
Mojang could even apply a small force to the Allay from the portal towards the player so it comes out already in the direction the player went.
This would also allow to check the distance between the portal and the Allay, when the player tps, so it wont teleport if it's + than X blocks away.

I think it should be echo shards as the duplication item, it'd give it an actual use in Hardcore. Besides, it kinda makes sense, like an "echo" of the Allay is formed.
I would say it needs to be a fully grown amethyst crystal, you can't auto farm that.
Using the echo shards would end up the same way of running out of allays on a multiplayer server.

I think you've got it wrong on balancing Allay duplication. Mojang's intention is to make them renewable, and tying them to a non-renewable resource found only in chests in Deep Dark Cities does not achieve that. If you want to do anything complicated with Allays, you need a lot of them, so having the duplication be easy makes sense. For any sorting system for non-stackable items, the very thing that sold the community on the mob, you need 1 Allay for every item you're sorting. Also, every other domestic mob that is breedable can be bred with easily obtainable, farmable items, so the Allay should be no different. Amethyst shards are the right call. The only alternate item that I would like would be cookies, as they really have no purpose at the moment, whereas Amethyst is at least used for the very cool tinted glass block.
Allay with an amethyst shard should be legit but when playing music from jukebox and a 5-10 minute cool down
Omg give an echo shard to an allay and it because a deep blue and black color and is much more hyper that would be cool
Rare is good but ancient city loot is not renuable which will make them still limited
Using music discs would also be a good solution, they are renewable and if only the ones droped by creepers, it would still be rare

I am not sure that duplicating the Allay does make them less special. We can breed axolotls but it hasn't made them less special from what I can tell (and the axolotls have more use all in all).
Maybe Allay either need a more complex 'food', maybe an amethyst bud (rather than a shard) as they need player interaction and would need the player to have silk touch and keep tabs on the amethyst so they don't grow into the full cluster.
Alternatively have a longer cool-down between duplication, or perhaps they only duplicate at night (often on servers night gets skipped more often).
Wait did mojang just destroyed non stackable item filters because the allays will just teleport to the nether with you whenever you go trough a portal.
Amethyst makes sense, but i really want med vexes to be tied into this
Maybe duplicate them with music disks! They are farmable with creepers & skeletons, but the farm is more complicated than an amethyst shard farm

I don't agree, I've raided two cities and got 4 disc fragments, if I wanted to make an allay item sorter, along with everyone else on the realm we would be doomed. Saying the amethyst shard is too easy to get lots, because you can farm it I think is wrong, they are slow to grow, you have to make the farm where they are, not where you want them, to the ordinary player this is not going to make infinite allays, to you tubers who spend most of their time working/playing minecraft, this will be something where you have time to make op farms and get masses of everything,I myself think that the echo shard and the disc fragments are to rare, the amethyst shard is almost good enough, maybe it should be a goat horn?
The allay is the first asexual creature that can reproduce om its own without a partner in minecraft,whoever came up with this is genius I love this I knew the allay would be the best vote thank god it won I hated the copper golem but I liked the Glare.IMO Allay>Glare>literally anything>copper golem
OK but doesn't that just make it harder to make an Alay amethyst farm if they always duplicate? Also, I still think that you should have to cure Vexs, it would make an interesting and new mechanic to work around capturing the wizard guy who makes them.
I strongly disagree with your take on Allay duplication, but that's okay. Another point why I prefer amethyst is that it feels purer than the shadow shards and more fitting for the Allays.

How about a regular music disc instead of amethyst shards? Renewable, requires work (record farm with skeletons and creepers), musical in nature
I think the Echo Shard makes sense, echoes are a repetition of sound so by giving one to an allay it's like you're making an echo of the original.
I agree with your sentiment that the allay duplication process is too simple. That said, both of your suggestions tie the allay to finite resources, which means functionally the finite allay cap only rises at the cost of lowering another finite resource. That's not sustainably renewable by definition, which was explicitly stated to be a very desired design goal. Also while Amethyst is infinite, its harvesting locations are fixed and finite so its production can be disrupted and/or controlled by players or factions to allow scarcity and drive economic forces for in-game markets multi-player server, which is interesting and potential fun. I think the duplication process could benefit from being made more complicated, to raise the challenge and satisfaction of completing the process. I think the simplest change to the current method is that duplication also consumes the record (something also infinitely farmable and would it great to have a way to expend to get rid of excess) that the allay is dancing to. Also, this would greatly complicate the automation of the allay duplication, compared to the current implementation. (As currently implemented, allays in cages along a minecart track path you can click to give into while riding a mine cart through the farm is all you'd need and that's too easy)
Should be a new item made from echo shards that can cure a vex. It would add more value to the ancient cities.
I am liking the new Minecraft Preview… I do have the latest Windows so I can get it from the store… HOWEVER why is it not part of the Minecraft Launcher app instead? Java, Bedrock and Dungeons is already there I see, why not Preview?
i'm a bit confuesd whether this only applies to bedrock and not java, or both? it's a really neat thing they added and i hope it also applies to java !
I think your right about the allay being to easy to duplicate. It feels kinda cheap just to get an amathest shard and it magically duplicates. If the echo shards where say, craft able out of skulk and ender pearls and amathest shards I think that would be a rewarding solution to the problem. also in order to obtain the recipe for the echo shard you have to go to the ancient city and maybe get like a ancient scroll or something. It would make it harder but not impossible and still renewable .

You missed the point of renewable there.
you can't make it challenging because servers exist, as long as people don't want/can't generate thousands of chunks looking for ancient cities (or anything non renewable for that matter) things that are added can't just be gated behind generating chunks
