  1. A lot of survival games are part of the sandbox genre where you sort of define your own goals and it tends to be a creative activity foremost. Though there is usually a 'goal', it isn't necessarily the heart of the the draw. In Valheim, ostensibly, the character's goal is to fight the boss monsters to earn a place at Valhalla. The Bird thing carrying the person in the trailer is a Valkyrie carrying you after you presumably died in battle on Earth. But as the player, its mainly about learning to survive each environment. It is a game that is encouraged to be played with friends so you can build sprawling bases with buddies and have cooperative experiences.
And yes, PVE is player vs environment.

I would say the appeal of these style of games is an outgrowth of playing with legos as a kid. Building cool things and having adventures with them.

  2. You are getting good with the terminology.
And yes Sandbox games are a whole genre. Sanbox means, you create basically your own adventure, rather than having an adventure written for you.

  3. i know nowadays videogames are synonymous with narrative experiences. often times putting story focused games like the last of us on a pedestal. but we have to remember the core of video games is "game" its rooted in the world and rules created by the designer to invoke a sense of challenge and accomplishment. in this case i love survival games because its really about resource management + blind exploration in the truest sense of the word. no heavy story to be burdened by and no linear shallow experience but rather the experience is driven by the need to explore and overcome the challenges set by the developers.

  4. Actually, the Zelda one you posted today has a lot of food recipes to learn, and depending on your diet, you get some cool bonus, like eating spicy food makes you more resistant to cold enviroments and stuff like that.

Games today have tons of "survive in the wild" or "take care of your body" features now, i guess it's neat and sometimes you can take a little bit of that to real life

  5. Re: Educational games.
The only game I know of that teaches healthy living is a game called Punch Club. Going to the store is time consuming when you're trying to maximise your time training, but it is obviously important to do so, otherwise training going forward will be difficult.

  6. Hannah, have you considered watching some people on your Discord play games that you're particularly interested in? Discord can stream games to a chat in the actual Discord app.

  7. the goal is have fun. You may want to go kill all the bosses and craft epic gear….or you may want to spend 50 hours building a homestead/castle/longhouse or whatever. End of the day, if you enjoy it, do it.
Sandboxes or on the rails, or hybrid of the two….does not matter, fun is always the goal. Unless its dota….in which case getting out without a stress induced breakdown is the aim ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. love Valheim! I've been playing a lot recently. The game is beautifull and for the casual player I am, Valheim is so chill. Just gatering resource (need more copper), building house, and explore the land (without chopping a three on my own head). There is a goal (kill 5 boss) but it's non essential. Peace

  9. Valheim, though released at the beginning of the month, is still considered "early access" meaning the game isn't fully finished (with respect to the content of the game). It was made by 5 people and since it's release at the beginning of the month it's sold over 5 million copies at $20 a piece.

    Q: What's the goal?
A: The primary goal is to defeat all (currently) 5 bosses. Each boss will drop items that will allow you to craft better equipment, build better structures, and ultimately defeat harder foes. Defeating harder foes allows you easier access to more food options for more health points.

There's a secondary goal of what ever goal you set for yourself. You could, perhaps want to unveil the entire map (each map of the world you're in is completely different from the next [unless specifically chosen]). Unveiling the map would take an incredible amount of time. Perhaps your goal you set is to build an amazing and wonderous viking village? Or to tame wolves and boars while creating a huge farm of crops so you and your group of friends wont ever have to worry about food ever again?

  10. A survival game where you have to "eat right" especially (I'm thinking of the last one I played called The Long Dark) when the winter season so far never moves onto spring. Another feature to hope and cheer for.

  11. Maybe starting a let's play will help you familiarize yourself with games in general. You can start calling yourself the Really Bad Gamer. I don't know if it's time constraints, personal reasons or something else entirely that you don't start playing games if they interest you.

  12. Yeah, minecraft is a good example of just do whatever kinds of games. They usually add some sort of goals that aren't obvious but you can completely ignore them and just mess about.

  13. Most of games have some end but there are also games without really goal like animal crossing for example. A lot of survival games have endles mode after finishing main goal also where you need just survive longest you can. I never was into survivals but start playing them on switch and now i love them (waiting for subnautica below zero now ๐Ÿ˜)

  14. You asked if there's a bunch of games like this, where there's not a string of objectives. Yeah it's a whole genre, like Minecraft, Conan Exiles, etc… The "goal" is set by you, what do you want/need to do to survive and thrive. I am 95% sure they are just called survival games, where point is to fight against the world (and possibly other players) to survive.

Valheim is mostly that, but in truth there is an over arching storyline and goal. Defeat the bosses of the realm and become one of Odin's favored warriors. This ultimately pushes you further and further into building bigger and cooler bases and upgrading your armor.

  15. I see you often remarking in different videos that characters and enemies should get along and become friends. This time it reminded me of an indie game called Undertale that exploded in popularity back in 2015 that had a mechanic where you could befriend your enemies. I think you'd like seeing that. It's a game with some great characters and a good message.

  16. When I was 8 or 7 I played this flash game on my older sister crappy dell laptop and in the game you would feed, train, and customize you pet chicken and unlock more games to play with your chicken only for the last game tricking you Into thinking it's a bike but in stead it's a meat grinder turning your little chicken into a gorey puddle that you were forced to cook and eat…. This game scared me for life now I don't eat Kfc, Chick-fil-a, or McDonald's

  17. I'm not sure if you've heard of it yet/have it on your docket already, but I feel a game you'd really appreciate is Thomas Was Alone, which is a simple puzzle platformer game where you play little colored blocks with different abilities that have to work together to solve puzzles, with excellent narration… it's effectively, "Be Friends, Instead," the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc0C8H1YgUM
