Outriders: How Good Marketing Led To A Massive Launch

Outriders is officially out, and while it’s having server issues right now that’s mainly because…so many people want to play. How does a totally new IP from a relatively unknown dev triple the debut Steam playercount of Crystal Dynamics and their Avengers? I have thoughts.

  1. My only real issue with the game so far, aside from touchy servers, is that I joined my friends playthrough while I was in the middle of clearing an area and when I got back to my own playthrough it hadn't saved any of my progress. I had to restart the whole long ass chapter over from the beginning

  2. I’ve just finished the story and nearly got my character to level 30 and I’m actually very impressed. My main issue atm is the endgame content. It’s very bland and just feels like harder and longer story missions. I don’t think this game will last long but I guess it’s just something fun to play since everything else is pretty boring atm

  3. Let's be honest here why is a hit? Bc gamepass yes it sold on pc etc but honestly outside of the trailer did you see any other marketing for the game? No
All I saw since then was gamepass its coming day on to games etc etc build hype n a base for it

  4. In my honest opinion this game is doing a lot of things right buuut the problem is the player base playing the game. Most are destiny players and division players basically looter shooter live service gamers and this game is not a live service game. So when people are done grinding the crap out of this game it’ll die out. And be forgotten

  5. There are plenty of PvE players burned out by Destiny's lack of content, abuse of repetition and never ending imbalances (not to talk about shady monetization schemes).

So if somebody makes a PvE-focused, no-microtransactions game where you don't have to jump through a hundred hoops to get semi-decent loot, of course people are going to give it a try.

Will Outriders be successful long-term? It depends on whether People Can Fly is able to fix the game's technical shortcomings and whether they keep their word regarding monetization.

  6. Take a hallway/tunnel to an open arena to fight mobs. Then, take a hallway/tunnel to an open arena to fight mobs. After that, take a hallway/tunnel to an open arena to fight mobs. Man, I'm feeling a bit linear here. And man, don't duck for cover. The bad guys have some pinpoint grenade spam coming for you. Like, they NEVER miss, ever. I mean, your a super god the entire remnant of humanity fears. But your weak ass gets taken out by a sniping shotgun from across the map if your not killing fast enough. No time for tactics! Kill, kill, kill!

  7. Looks like it could be fun. The reviews on steam are not looking too good though. Alot of reviewers complaining about the anti-cheat system being intrusive with a kernel mode driver and causing frame rate issues. Guess the demo went really well but the full retail release was not the same experience.

  8. Outriders is a fantastic game in so many ways. Yeah it's got some issues but they're relatively minor things with the server issues clearly being a massive outlier. The game plays well the loot feels good the skills feel great and the guns are fun to use when you start modding them. The game is fun as all hell.

  9. I'm very impressed that there's a narrative. You're not a silent protagonist, you're an actual character. I've been very surprised to how unattached they are to characters meaning they kill them like candy, but in a good way!

I will say, though, I've been getting my ass kicked on solo. You can barely ever hide behind cover due to grenades or AOE powers and even if you can, they have every angle on you. This leads to getting melted regardless of your world tier.

  10. Outriders is doing well because many streams are being "sponsored" paid to stream it. Then those that are not being paid are think it's the next big game so want to get in as early as possible. Outriders is nothing more than a Cyberpunk flop in the making. When sponsored streams stop streaming it the game will be as dead as Anthem.

  11. I'm not understanding how this game's linearness doesn't bother a lot of people. The maps feels like a rat maze, you can't climb on anything, shooting feels clunky and robotic. Plus enemies do not miss shots which is hilariously annoying. Is it the loot?

  14. I actually hated their pre-release marketing strategy of saying "all these other games are trash but ours is different and special"
tell me about your game without sounding like a pretentious douche.

post-release though i've seen their updates on the launch day stuff and they're being very straight up about it instead of giving PR garbage, which i do like. if they keep carrying themselves that way then that's awesome.
