I'll give you one single clue for this one. MGS isn't exclusive, and Sony had nothing to do with this.
As for the PS5, it's not a lie. Sony was very clear that they didn't want to specify specs or go in depth about GPU / SoC specs. Consumers, however, wanted to spread disinformation camapigns specifically to benefit their arbitrary love for a piece of plastic. I think it's finally safe to completely state that engineering samples were nearly on-point, minus final specifications (voltage, clock frequency tests, etc). What's important to note is that the PS5 is utilizing the RDNA pipeline with some RDNA2 modifications done. Whereas the PS5 is lacking quite a bit of RDNA features, such as the Geometry Engine and anything involving advanced primitives; It's utilizing mostly a vega based geometry engine and rendering setup, underneath the RDNA pipeline. Additionally, multiple faucets of the instructionsets are derived underneath VEGA 7nm, which is why there is a fundamental similarity between Renoir and the PS5, more than just smartshift. In order to ramp up the clocks, as numerous pointed out correctly in the past, instructionsets were removed on the CPU to inherently lower temperature during runtime, thus programming without leveraging them will allow for a faster overall GPU (higher frequencies achieved) whilst maintaining thermals. The downfall is that certain instructions sets are fundamentally being utilized in games today to achieve much higher frame-rates, so arbitrarily removing these to 'hit' 60fps defeats the purpose of them anyway. Additionally, multiple instructionsets on the GPU had been replaced with VEGA, to allow for easier porting of titles to leverage a more powerful system, which also allows backwards compatibility to run properly on hardware instead of specifically upon software. This inherently means that when you pop-in a PS4 Pro game, you get all the PS4 Pro hardware benefits at your disposal, except now with a more robust geometry rendering pipeline (rdna pipeline) whilst utilizing the same instructionset and geometry engine (or rather, a more robust version of that geometry engine; Instead of utilizing the original primitive engine, it's utilizing an advanced version that was relatively absent on VEGA 7nm, but was a form of this — a programmable primitive shader engine, allowing for culling on prims).
Meanwhile, rDNA1 had programmable prims absent, rDNA2 utilized both programmable primitives and mesh; but only mesh was designed robust (later known as varable rate, vrs). This is just one simple example as to what is fundamentally different between these two consoles. Something that hasn't been leveraged yet on the Xbox. But let's just go a little deeper. Say instruction set was utilized for the PS5 but is relatively absent or 'less' robust on the Xbox. This inherently means throwing the PS5 'optimized' code onto the Xbox would mean about the same relative performance, maybe a little less, since this arbitrary code to execute is primarily absent or not designed to run in this specific manner. But "it runs" at around the same guidelines set.
So real world. Let's talk about why games are running the 'same' settings on both consoles and are either hitting the 'same' guidelines, or favor the PlayStation (rarely favor the Xbox). I mean, if it's "the same GPU', shouldn't the one with 'more shaders' be better? (Like for example, an RTX 3070 verses a 3080)
The devkits for the PS5 were out in 2019, with numerous iterations passed to each. The Xbox Series devkits weren't available, in fact, most developers were given the option of a specified system setup on PC with 'devkit modes' available to run. 2020 hits, these became available (during covid…and wfh, for example).
If a game takes 4 years to develop, let's just say 4 years for arbitrary measure, and the game is launching in 2020 / 2021, and you receive the devkit at the time you plan on going gold with your game — what does that mean for the Xbox development? I'll let you think about that for a moment.
Instead, many developers opted to go a different route. They optimized and designed the game for the PS5, afterall — "it should be the same console but with a little weaker GPU". They noticed that it leverages many instructionsets found in the PS4 Pro, and this specified for firmware enhancements at a low level (an API). When they decided to work on the Xbox version, the thought was to bring the PS5 version to the Xbox Series X and it should run better. But instead, it ran 'about the same'. Instead of going back and figuring out why, they already had 'so many issues' getting it to hit a native 4k, 'why bother' (on both consoles mind you), so they did a different method — with such a short window, with permission, allow the PS5 version and optimization to be utilized on the Series X, knowing that the games will run identical with bugs here/there, and just work out those bugs for right now. They received the devkits so late, there isn't a lot of time to completely redevelop that 'version' to work on that new console. Ironically they 'could' have, but what would be better — delaying the game for the Xbox, or just releasing it at equal measurement as the PS5 so it 'runs the same'? Microsoft gave them a clear answer: Just release it with on the same date, it's fine if it doesn't fully leverage the console, as long as it is the same as the PS5, why does it matter."
So yes, this could hold precedent for future titles, but I'll just be a little know it all and say that you're foolish if you think that every game coming out later on will be the same, benefit the PS5 or 'trade blows'. There isn't a competition in Microsoft's mind. It's based on what the developer wants to do with the game. But don't expect the Xbox Series consoles (or the PS5 for this same matter) to have Ray Tracing on par with the RTX 30 series. That's just stupid. Otherwise, the performance is going to be a bit daunting elsewhere, and the Xbox Series console does have the ability to have ML upsampling (like a DLSS technology). They haven't used this yet..frankly because it's not even available yet (or recently became available, is what I should say). A lot of the Xbox Series API is still under development (cc blogs), and technology that the PS5 doesn't have, quite frankly, is littered all across that console.
So to sum this up: Sony didn't lie to their audience. They just withheld information and allowed people to speculate based on disinformation. Moore's Law is Dead lied to you. Red Gaming Tech lied to you. Syke lied to you. Tidux lied to you. The latter two are the better half of the "rDNA3" and 'Infinity Cache" leaks. Additionally, people that 'claimed to be in contact with Cerny' were these same 'leaks' that was nothing more than disinformation spreading. No, Sony has absolutely zero plans to acquire ANY studio. No, Sony has zero plans to fund ANY studio or development of any first-party title outside of their current studios scopes. Sony is playing this generation safe because they focused too heavily on their first party to develop this console. Why on earth would they put their consoles 'faith' in the hands of Square Enix, or dare I say Konami, when both of these companies historically do not sell well on the PlayStation as of late. So let's put those to rest. To whom could be funding Square? I'd bet Sony made a contractual pact with Square (as per usual) to release titles "exclusive" to their platform (or timed with the duress of not mentioning it's timed). As for Konami, you have the wrong company, as most of the people online do. And to assume 'exclusivity' for a title that otherwise is on all platforms is a bit of a stretch. Remember: The only people who claimed "MGS" was exclusive are the same people who were recently caught lying about nearly everything with the PS5. So let's put that into the assumption. Assume they were wrong about MGS, but it's still coming back. Why would anyone assume it'll be exclusive to Sony when Sony has made it clear they don't care about these series at all? (I'll let that sink in with some people, as I don't think this point can resonate enough). Additionally, Konami goes to great lengths to make sure PT wasn't/isn't available to be played on the PS5. Seems more like there's a partnership agreement against Sony, rather than for Sony, no?
