I think the problem with 3's is that it's not just that it statistically yields more points per attempt than twos, it also opens up the court for cutters and slashers, and it discourages double teams from defense. Like Ray Allen said you cant just attack the basket because the big is waiting for you down there. Now if you have a center that is good outside shooter, the defense's center gets dragged outside the paint to defend the 3 from the opposing big opening up the interior for all kinds of easy shots.
Teams looked at that and thought, hey lets do 3's all game long without considering Ray Allen's point of going into rhythm first not forcing it. Houston's 27 consecutive miss was a perfect example of that. Rockets were maybe out of rhythm, but the coaching staff did not train them to shoot midrange when the outside shot is not falling.
If you can have a consistent 3 point shot and a solid enough midrange that the coach grants you green light from there, you'd be something like kawhi offensively.
This new nba is exciting, mostly during the playoffs, but it’s not better. It can get boring to watch Zero Defense, 1 player driving, and all other 4 waiting for the pass to shoot the 3.
It will take something of a Detroit 2003-04 like team to have that happen. Teams that will deny the three point line and dare the drive.
So glad its not just me thinkin the NBA has gone 3pt crazy.
It's not fun watching that.
When did he start lisping? (Legit question)
Imma tell my kids….this is Ray Tyson
It's not curry or lillards fault the nba has always had some great 3 point shooters but today it seems like everybody thinks they have to be curry u got Westbrook shooting 22 %he should never shoot a 3 there is more to the game than 3 we used to make fun of European ball for the exact same reason and dont get me started on the refs they need to let them play it a physical game and they r trying to take it out but what do we do stop watching is the only thing I can think hit there pocketbook and maybe they will change!
He not the only player to say that
Don't blame the the players, blame the math. The only reason everyone is jacking 3s is simply because it gives you higher points per possession. there are over 50 players in the league shooting over 40% and over 120 players shooting over 36% from 3. That translates to 60% and 55% respectively in terms of 2point% to match the efficiency of those 3s. There's almost no one in the league who shoots over those percentages from 2pt range apart from guys who live in the paint, and usually on low volume as well. Even KD the best midrange shooter today only hovers around 50% in the midrange, so he's better off taking a 3 under almost any circumstance.
If you wanted to fix the problem the only way is to reduce the reward of shooting a 3, to something like 2.5 points. Which obviously isn't going to happen.
Ray Allen is a very well spoken person. He articulated the idea of practice exactly the way it should be.
1 2 3 shooting 3 pointers are ok. But forwards and Centers Shooting 3 pointers that is where NBA is TODAY……
Blame it on Steph. LOL. If you can make 3s, you should shoot 3s, dont let no one tell you what u can and cant do. You do what it takes to win within the rules so that's. If you see basketball today as just a 3-point shooting contest, u not really watching the game. Do u not see how Lebron still dominates the game, or Derozan being agitated being not an all-star. Or KD when he is healthy playing. Modern basketball is still fun to watch if u really watch it, not the highlights…
If u never saw Jesus Shuttlesworth n his prime u have no idea how gr8 he was
He’s Shuttlesworth to me
Shut up ray
I wish Ray could've talked more….. great critique
Ray is still the best example to learn shooting mechanics from
With all due respect to the legend Ray Allen, I don't think the mid range game is being lost at all. If anything, I think it's become revitalized because a lot of elite offense players in the league like Kawhi, PG, Dbook, Mitchell, Bron, Curry, Dame etc take advantage of bigs playing drop coverage and take the open mid range shot. Sure, a lot of teams have players that chuck up bad contested 3s more than ever, but there's still players like DeMar and CP3 that basically live in the mid range and are still elite players that help a team win.
I think Kawhi single handedly exposed the whole "3s and layups" Morey ball thing when he took over the playoffs in 2019 and showed that although the midrange shot may be a "bad shot" statistically, it don't matter when you make like 70% of it instead of shooting 3s that you're not really good at.
Also, two bigs in Jokic and Embiid are leading the MVP race rn (although Embiid is out due to injury and Dame's in 2nd place if I remember correctly), and this should show that the big guys are actually making noise in the league. The game's not completely moved on from old school bruising centers, but big men are required to do more than that. They're required to defend multiple positions on switches, contest shots at the rim, set solid screens, and hopefully, stretch the floor on top of being effective in the post. Just because they don't post up every possession and run the offense through bigs don't mean that they aren't featured imo.
Still not gonna argue with a legend tho. Nothing but respect.
My generation, late 80s/1990s SC basketball… respect.
Ok let me say this… it's NOT Curry's fault just like it wasn't Jordan's fault, nor Shaq's fault, nor Wilt's fault. It's not even Magic or Lebron's fault for being a big 'guard'. EVERYTHING evolves, and basketball is not immune. Rock music is not the same, rap music is not the same. Football players are stronger and faster, gymnasts….and so on. Most of us would like to see basketball played "the way it used to be played" or the way we'd like it to be played, but for the most part it's not. For instance, one of the many things I dislike about today's game is the BS foul calls. The players have even bought into it and some have mastered drawing fouls, but I grin and bear it. Ok, I'll stop here.
Thoughts?
so right
i feel like i’m a better basketball player now just from listening to this
They maf cuz they cant shot that far stop crying ik its bad shots but the game is evolving yall act like curry and dame putting guns to these kids heads and tell them to shoot that from crazy distances
the fact that bruising big men can no longer find nba jobs is a HUGE problem. the 3 point line needs to be moved back. and corner threes eliminated.
Let the defender actually defend and you won’t have this problem.
Its a problem when your down by 1 or even tied, 3 seconds left and your shootin a 3. Why?
For those who never saw this man play in college and his early career….. understand that he was an all around basketball player and scorer. He became a 3-point specialist when he got older and traded to Boston.
Basketball ratings have fallen pretty bad. I blame two things. Flops and 3 point shots.
IMO, they should shrink the rim by 1/2 and inch and keep shrinking it until players move inside.
The rim is 18" and the ball is 9.5" wide
College basketball right now is played more stratigically and disciplined then NBA basketball. Let that sink in for a min. I've watched current NBA games where one team is on a 10-0 run and the opposing team has no go to or set play to break their scoreless streak. All iso or pick and rolls to create a 3 point shot. "Most" rely on shooting their way out of a scoreless run. That may be entertaining, but def not great basketball.
The mid range game isn’t being lost it’s gone.
Facts in 2days game the point brings up the ball & everybody sets up behind the 3point line 🤦🏾♂️
I agree with this it is bad when teams are trading missed 3s but at the same time last night the mavs and blazers game it was absolutely raining 🌧 41 threes and both teams shooting 45+ from 3.
Curry changed the game for the worse but its not his fault…if he can make them keep shooting…..but that system of a thousand screens(some moving screens) they was running during those yrs. was aggregious to watch
Not entertaining. I can’t watch after watching for 30 years
I'd have to agree I watch pretty much every single Miami Heat game when you shoot and Miss five 3-pointers in a row it drives me insane and then come down for number 6 not only is it boring to watch it's annoying
I've lost interest in the NBA, there just isn't enough defense. But hey, NBA seems to be doing just fine.
