Should You Turn DLSS On or Off? | Escape from Tarkov Graphics Comparison

For once, rather than tell you what DLSS is or how it works, I figured I would show you all graphics and performance comparisons from every map, in all kinds of situations and locations, so you can decide if you think DLSS is worth having on and/or what setting you should use that best suits your preferences. As usual, your mileage may vary, so I suggest repeating a few of these tests on your own machine and seeing how it performs!

  1. Two things:
How the hell are your framerates so high? Is it just because you're in offline mode? For me at least, even when I do get high framerates there's still pretty pronounced microstutter (although it seems a bit better after the most recent patch)

    for context, 5800x and a 3060ti

Secondly: I still think Tarkov's DLSS implementation is pretty rough. Ghosting and artifacting seems worse than a lot of other games, and some scopes are seemingly completely broken. Additionally, the game seems too cpu bound in a lot of circumstances to actually hit a higher framerate than what you'd normally be getting lol.

  2. I think this comparison is without the AI Scav Bots. Because Tarkov's biggest fps issue is AI Bots. They consume our fps so much. You can try this by playing offline with no bots and playing online, you will see the difference.

  3. i use DLSS on quality just because its almost free performance without a hit to quality although it is still a hit to quality for sure, its not the best implementation of DLSS ive ever seen, some games are almost flawless with it like death stranding and some are pretty bad, i think tarkov is very middle ground with it, its a rather grainy game to begin with unlike something like death stranding which is far cleaner looking at ''stock''.

my friend plays on an ultrawide display 3440 x 1440p and notices no difference in performance on lighthouse, his hardware is a 12400k and 2080 super. i notice a bigger difference in performance for sure, im using a 5900x and 3080ti and play at 4k.

if i had to guess id say this video shows tarkov is very cpu heavy and is likely taxing 1 or 2 threads to the max on the processor used which results in little to no change in fps when using DLSS because there's no two ways about it you cant improve gpu performance using DLSS if the GPU isn't tapping out, any time the gpu is waiting for the cpu or another component is when it wont hit 98 percent plus utilization and then its something else holding you back which DLSS wont help…. which is typical tarkov lets be honest how often do you see framerates not looking great and the game not using the GPU to its fullest, its infuriating but that's how it is.

they need to sort out the visual bugs but i can already tell you if you don't already know there is no fix for the blurring, thats DLSS in a nutshell for motion right now, we will have to wait for a new version of DLSS entirely before hopes of them fixing the motion artifacting.

  4. just gunna put this here because I've seen a lot of people not know what DLSS actually does and what better place to put it than here on the most helpful tarkov youtubers Video showcasing FPS numbers, o7 veritas.

On a high level to put it simply, lets say you use a 4K monitor and Using DLSS will make the game run on the GPU like its set to 1080p.

So obviously 4k is much more demanding than 1080p so its easier to run 1080p with more FPS. Then RTX cards use AI magic sauce to "enhance" the image to make it almost impossible to tell the difference between true 4K and DLSS 4K Its not perfect like if you sit down and nitpick still images you can probably find differences where true 4K is better. At the end of it that's the point of DLSS, Give you more FPS while running the game at a lower resolution and tricking you to not be able to tell its at a lower resolution.

You could already do something like this before DLSS. the supersampling option if you set it to 0.5x basically does the same with rendering the game like its a lower resolution. It just doesn't have the Magic AI sauce or any sauce whatsoever really.

Like when AMD's FSR comes to tarkov everyone should be able to use it I think and it does the same but without the AI sauce, instead they have their own special kind of sauce. Whether which sauce is better that up for debate. I don't have a RTX and am stuck on a 1080ti so I don't have personal experience with DLSS other than hacking it to work on my 1080ti but that'll never actually work since my 1080ti doesn't have AI cores like RTX cards doo. I just love tech.

I will say DLSS should look better than AMD FSR and FSR will look better than doing the Super sampling method, But NOTHING will look better than using true resolution Just you know moar FPS's.

DLSS is not that effective for 1080p monitors because you really don't need DLSS at that point but its possible.

Also you all saw those numbers from light house and reserve. That's called CPU not gud enough to run Lighthouse and reserve like it does factory or labs. DLSS in that instance will just make your GPU work less hard. (No Noiceguy lifespan is absolutely nothing to worry about its like the difference of 7 years and 6 years 11 months 29 days 23 hours 59 minutes and 58 seconds, numbers obviously not exact but point is made) (Its only when you heavily overclock something and do mods to the card to get moar overclock you have to worry about "lifespan" but even then your doing all of that for a reason)

  5. I dunno, maybe I just don't have eyes for this sorta thing, but I really don't notice much of a difference between DLSS on and off, and with it on you get big frame rate increases usually.

The first couple shots I noticed some blurring of textures at Performance level but usually I'm hard pressed to see a difference.

Btw already subbed and thumbs up vids big 🐕

  6. Apreaciate the video. For me – DLSS is a godsend. On 3060ti (at 1440p) I got a 20/22fps boost across all maps using balanced mode. Game looks fantastic.
So yeah, for me – Probably one of the best updates in years.

  7. From what I understand about DLSS is a performance increase at higher resolutions. Not really meant for the 1080 resolutions that most people use, but more like the 2K and 4K resolutions. Increasing frame rate at those higher resolutions.

  9. I may have missed it… but is this on 2k or 1080p? im asking because of the pixelated edges on labs show up more and what seems like ghosting or screen tear in the video segments. im not 100% sure

DLSS for me does nearly nothing in online raids. I get maybe +10-15 FPS at best in the quality mode, while the image quality is noticably degraded and everything is blurry as hell. Optics is close to be unuseable because of the fuzzyness AND for some reason i have like 40 FPS when looking through optics with DLSS on. Without DLSS its 55-60 fps while looking through a scope and 70-75 FPS normally on open maps. I dont see a point in this feature. Overhyped crap.
Oh, yeah, and NVGs is complitely broken with DLSS too, its like your PMC have a bad trip or something.

  11. The problem for me is not in the static display of the game, its when moving that it becomes an issue. Other players have ghosting, Reticles look wonky, ghosting and ads rendering issues. The uplift in fps is great, but not at the sacrifice ot the game

  12. i got a 3080ti amd i casn't use DLSS, bc when i do all bright areas flicker like CRAZY as soon as i slowly move my mouse up and down. its epilepsi bad
i wish i could use DLSS, but i guess its a massive no for me

  13. hey veritas would you consider looking into using Nvidia's DSR upscaling and then using DLSS as a sort of AA method. i have done some tests my self and seen a DSR+DLSS look Far better then just native while still getting better fps or the same.
its sort of like harnessing DLSS's Ai to improve your native resolution and its crazy impressive how much better the game can look using this method

  14. What this shows is you are absolutely CPU limited and see no real benefit from Balanced or Performance outside of Labs/Factory.
The likely reason you see the jump from Off to Quality is all the pipelines from CPU -> RAM -> GPU being smaller. This is also the case with less vertices/indices being sent, i.e at the edge of the map or looking up or down. To alleviate this everywhere they would need much more aggressive or smarter culling outdoors/around windows. All the rendering features that are not GPU only, and especially things like SSR have intermediate buffers and render targets that shrink with DLSS on. However, the 9700k/RAM combo is not fast enough to scale that past DLSS Quality.

    On a 5900x at 5ghz and 32GB DDR4 3733 CL14 I see more scaling between the DLSS modes.

  15. I think a lot of people are forgetting BSG didn’t add DLSS as a”Fix”. It’s an added option.
Like your favorite car now comes with another transmission option or any other analogy.

  16. Based on what I see here, I'm going to give both balanced and quality a try (I see no reason to go for performance) and see what's what. I've got a 12600KF, 3060ti, 16gb corsair vengeance RAM. I'll let you know in a follow up comment. Thanks again for all the work that you do. It is always a pleasure to watch.

  17. With a 3090, 10900k and 64 and 32 GB of ram, DLSS brings my fps from 70-90 to 100-110. Absolutely unacceptable for such high end hardware, this game has terrible optimization.

  18. DLSS itself is great but most people don't realize that in Tarkov most people with RTX cards are CPU limited and not GPU limited which means DLSS won't do anything since your GPU is not 100% utilized. The only way to increase performance really is to buy a new CPU that has faster single core speed since this game is not optimized that well.
What this means for RTX users though is that we can now play at higher graphic settings with pretty much the same performance as before.
