In 4th Era 201,a huge undead army lead by Alessia the lich swept across all of Skyrim,Ever since then the Empire has kept it off limits,and the land has turned from a beautiful landscape to a place swarming with the undead.Thats basically what it sound like in the books

the necromancers armor has a buff that makes you invisible when sneaking which is why you were shrouded in darkness 😊
