The Problem With New Champions | League of Legends

Arguably the best League of Legends video I have ever made (in my eyes anyway). 16 hours of scripting, recording, collecting footage, audio editing, video editing… Anyway! Today I bring you a very special discussion video talking about the issues I see with recent champions, both new releases and reworks.

Please note that this is not a champion hate video or a Riot hate video. I’m simply voicing my thoughts and criticisms because I’m a little disappointed and sad in the direction Riot is going for new champions. I’ve had it in the back of my head for a while (the thumbnail on this video was made back in July of this year) but the straw that broke the camel’s back was definitely Seraphine’s release. I hope you enjoy the video! I spent so much time and effort on it and I’m really happy with how it came out.

  1. Honestly, The game design is going downhill after tencent bought it.
China influence. The art work is clearly more on "Chinese" art side.
The new assassin and Champion are very mobile and fast. Instant kill.

  2. Bit late to the party. But I'd also like to provide this outlook:

At the end of the day, not every character needs to connect to the lore, in fact I think leagues lore would be a lot cleaner if only certain subsets of champions connected to the narrative. That way we get both characters who have narrative and connect to others but also get the fun random champions that exist only for it being a fun idea.

I think the idea that every character needs lore that connects to the narrative is unrealistic and is often used in hypocritical ways. Seraphine is critisised for being her own character in her own bubble. Yet nunu and willump are fine to most despite also being in their own bubble. And yet both have a really good design.

I bet, if characters like seraphine were put in their own subsection of "made for fun" and others who were made for narrative were used in such.

At the end of the day, league is a game first, a story second. It's no shock that devs make characters they simply just want too because it's fun for them and should be fun for us, but we are too concerned with fictional characters stories to simply enjoy what they have.

  3. honestly, i think Sett and Samira are really good lore-wise because they add aspects of regions never shown before.
Samira is a shurimian immigrant that likes Noxus because it lets her do everything she wants. it's the only region that really offer freedom, if you brave enough to take it

Sett is the product of the Noxus side of Ionia, where it is colonized. He grew up without a father and he and his mother were rejected from Ionia. Sett embraces the ideas of Noxus : just take what you want if you're strong enough. he was rejected from humans too, he doesn't care about anything or anyone except his mother. He just wants her to have a nice live, and would do everything for this

  4. To be honest I didn't read samira's lore, but her theme immediately told me that she's from bildewater. So you just shocked me by saying she's from noxus. She looks entirely like someone who would be gankplank's rival, like a female captain

  5. Lately I just feel like they do everything to attract more customers. They don't focus on lore, or on good champion design or any of that really, they just mass produce trash that will get some people's momentary attention until they move on to another rushed uninteresting thing that appeals to the masses. Both the new champions and the recent in game events are a proof of that.

  6. My favorite champion before the rework was Akali. After the rework I played maybe, 40 matches, realized that she didn't play anything like old Akali, she was too complicated for a guy who plays just to have fun. Old Akali I could play well even after a 2 week break. With new Akali, I take a one day break and I can't get anything done and she's not anything like what old Akali was like for me, which was simple yet fun.
I don't like Riot. This was my rant. I am sorry, and thank you.

  7. Honestly, if they just kept on with seraphine trying to unite zaun and piltover once again and lose the dumb stage platform she sits on and gave her like a piltover made microphone or something to enhance her or something, she'd be fine by me.

  8. From a lore & design perspective, Kaisa is frankly an embarrassment to the game.
She has no personality & no depth. She’s simultaneously everything at the same time to make her nothing. She has some of the most voice lines in the game yet has the least identity.
She’s genuinely league’s Mary Sue. At least Seraphine & Samira have a gimmick, & have a personality & intent.

Kaisa could’ve been so much & brought so much, yet brought nothing. All I can distinct from her is that she has what seems to be Australian accent & really really likes peaches or something?? & she counts her own kills??

  9. Actually when you play Samira she has a phrase that says: "Born in Shurima, raised by Noxus. Maybe i'll die in Demacia to make things interesting, huh?" I mean, it doesn't excuse the gun, it may depend on who this Indari teacher was from, actually, but she doesn't sound like she should completely represent Noxus

  10. 18:00 Yes! Yes! I commented exactly that on another video. Being forced to play to an opponents tune just because he picked a champion is not fun, let me explorer my own ways to beat them. But when you make certain mechanics just so overtuned and only give a single or maybe two counter mechanics then you simply don't have a choice but to be forced to play the game to your opponents tune rather than your own.

6:27 Somehow you asking why the hell these Champions were made soothed all of my frustrations with League, at least for a moment.
11:01 You showed kled in there and I am pretty sure he has some weird gun when he is unmounted, still a good point.
13:41 All of modern leagues problems in a nutshell (feature creep)

  11. Even though seraphine doesnt fit the game itself, lore wise as well; I do love the way her kit works and her theme as a singer. There is a upvote here from another person talking about how seraphine could be a siren and I very much agree with this idea. It would fit the game a lot better. I do like the art of seraphine/kda skin. Basically, the skin could just stay sort of (as it is just a change in the look of a champion with a different theme) but the original champion could be changed to a siren.

  12. Also the recent trend of making champions that is very anime-esque, like the supposed Ruined King, Viego. I have no problem with anime-esque characters, but Riot is noticeably distancing themselves far from designing champions that look like actual monsters. It's now has gotta be a waifu or a husbando, that players can simp towards. I want more corrupted designs like ChoGath or RekSai.
