What Happened To Ahri? – Why People Stopped Playing Her | League of Legends

For today’s WNOP episode we’ll be talking about a champion who, like Ornn, Braum and Rengar, USED to be popular for a time but have been gradually falling out of relevance and are now rarely played, at least in comparison to how much they were picked back then. Let’s talk about Why NO ONE Plays Ahri: The Nine Tailed Fox anymore!

  1. What about fox fire also increasing her other projectile speeds. What i didnt like was that there wasn't 9 fox fire orbs, also charm not being a minion pen. What about charm doing splash aoe around hit champ, ap increasing duration, if multi target hit dmg from ap ratio down an duration down, minion pen duration down.

  2. As a former League player and Ahri main. I agree with this a lot. Her gameplan in every game is just too one note and too bland where the game has evolved so much that she remains too stagnant. And there are better assassin mid champs out there now with dmg output better than her's, she relies too much of her Charm and Ult that if you do not land them consistently she falls behind HARD. It is really a shame because League Korea is currently doing a 10th anniversary of their server as well as celebrating Ahri's release as a champion. I wish that Riot did something with her kit and gameplay/gameplan to get her out of the blandness. I am pretty sure I barely scratched the surface or missed the mark on this but I really wanted to give my two cents on this as she was my first champion when I picked up League. She was very fun and still is but….She's just too stagnant now and too one note as mentioned previously. Not to mention her reworks were just flip flopping between what to keep and what to throw away.

  3. My only problem is her safety, that’s not something mages get. Immobility is a staple of mages yet she throws it out the window while still being able to out trade most mages in lane. Plus there’s the fact that she has yasuo relevance where she can 0-15 and one combo people because her base stats are good enough. They need to give her better ap ratios and lower her base damage to something more on par with the rest of mages.

  4. I am still an Ahri main and love the champion but I think what weakened her over time was the mobility creep. Her e is easily avoided by 90% of the champions that are played. Thank god I play in gold elo where nobody respects e-flashes, my winrate with ahri skyrocketed as soon as I got the hang of it lol

  5. 700k on ahri. I think the movement boost being moved to foxfire was way better because foxfire does not inturupt movement like Q does. it made the movement a lot more accessable and viable for escaping sticky situations.

  6. Her kit is weird. If she misses her shit nothing bad really happens, she just has to wait 5 seconds for cooldowns and just try again. Also her charm is a insta-kill.
As a designer you can't allow a champion with sustain, hard CC, mobility, true DMG, decent range and movement speed buff to deal big pp DMG.

  7. Ahri did need those nerfs though. I remember back in season 5/6 days when she had 55+% WR and I think 25-50% PR and you had to play against ahri every single game. A character having a high PR and WR at the same time just means something is really imbalanced. It really sucked. You mention that her kit is very heavily reliant on her E and thats the way it should be. How you played ahri was just fish for E's, and when you eventually hit one that person is completely dead. That's inherently strong, because it means that this assassin character remains useful to the team via CC, even if they've fallen behind and deal low damage. What other assassin has a 0 risk, no condition, spammable, low cooldown, ranged CC ability that is completely fire and forget? You don't even have to be close by. Just enter with 1000 range and press E, if it doesnt work you walk away, or if you really fuck up, R away. I think there are inherent flaws in her design these days, with how quick and fast-paced league has become, I don't think she is really compatible with how the game works now.

There was no interactivity to the character, and a skilled ahri was absolutely a complete nuisance. An assassin with a ranged CC ability where you take your hands off the keyboard and die. Toning down her numbers was necessary, and i think having her W and R be relatively weak without landing her E makes her actually outplayable, instead of the ancient "ahri spams W and R after missing all her skills and still eviscerates you". I can't really think of another character in league of legends who is mobile and has an AOE ability that just homes in on nearby players.

While not a complete nuisance like Rengar or Talon in terms of archaic design choices, at her peak she was so meta and strong, especially at the high level. I honestly prefer new Irelia over old Ahri, and i dont think i'd ever trade that in.

  8. To me personally Ahri has always been someone to dart around the outskirts of a battle and throw her spells from there. She uses Spirit Rush to avoid the enemy frontline while annoying the backline with Charm and Orb. Ofcourse this playstyle makes her heavily team reliant as she doesn´t do enough damage to oneshot the backline. On the other hand it is highly rewarding when it works since the enemy frontline waste time and possibly skills trying to stop you while still dealing some good damage and cc over the course of a teamfight.

  9. She is outdated. She needs to have this Assassin Style Karma gameplay where she can be an Assassin or Generalist. the First Cast of Spirit Rush Upgrades Q W E or a Two Part Passive where Enough Stacks of Essence Theft Upgrades her Abilities etc.

  10. What if we took an inspiration from Zoe and put that in Ahri? Remove damage from her ultimate, heavily buff up damage of her normal abilities and give her ultimate charges and can reset on takedowns? Maybe something like how akali had before rework but a skillshot.

If I'm overdoing it let me know, it's just my thought

  11. Being a close range pretty squishy mage that has a good chunk of your damage potential stuck behind two skill shots that are honestly slow…is kind of sus in this day in age of LoL. I mean it pretty much goes like this…you try to get a kill on Ahri. Follow this flow chart.

Did you kill them? Yes- Good for you. No- go to next step

Are they able to kill you easily? Yes- go to next step. No- You should be fine.

Do you have ult dash charges or a flash still? Yes- You MIGHT be okay. No- Get ready to suggestively die my friend.

Too much mobility and too much focus on murdering one another as fast a possible in this day in age. And the worse part her favorite targets are squishes…but they squishy because they are damage. So yeah…better kill them or prepare to die, as they will blow you to bits or chase you down with whatever mobility they got from items and runes.

  12. she has the same role as leblanc, burst mage with high mobility, except leblanc actually deals damage. You have literally no reason to play ahri because she loses almost every single match up with her 35% AP scaling Q. she is a hybrid between mage and assassin and is pretty bad on both playstyles.

  13. My idea for an Ahri rework only slightly changes her abilities. Her q is no longer a skill shot, and does its second instance of damage if she lands another spell. Her ult is moved to her W, but changed to a dash that deals damage and recast returns her to starting point, and her e is still a skillshot, but she has to stay in range for 2 seconds to charm the opponent. Her new ult allows her to cast any of these abilities a second time with improved damage.

  14. Former Ahri Main here: I think the biggest problem with Ahri is that you have to put so much effort into her, but get very underwhelming return out of it. Every other champion has at least one thing they can do better with less effort put in. Unless youre extremely fed you need more than one full rotation to kill a single target, burst mages need less spells to kill with faster rotations, artillery mages can kill you from twice the distance away, battle mages have better defense and sustained damage, control mages have better cc and area control. She just doesnt excel at anything, and the one thing she had going for her, her high mobility despite being a mage has been nerfed and power crept into oblivion.

  15. I've always played Ahri less of an assassin but more of a tanky AP diver that can sustain skirmishes. Can't burst anyone but ADCs, but I can for sure take long fights and be consistent with dealing a huge chunk of damage to any unit. And you have enough resistances to survive any kind of burst whatsoever

  16. 2:00 this is actually wrong tho, after 15 min into the game if Ahri only has Luden and sorc boots she stops one shotting caster with one Q, which in a lot of way makes playing her from behind even more unbearable, you might as well build liandry at this point to keep up with the cs cause that's the only way u can catch up with people

  17. Long ago, I grabbed Ahri in the event I was forced to go Mid. This was before the changes to Draft were implemented. Back then, she was a nightmare to deal with as most mid laners were Lux, Annie, or assassins that couldn't trade back with Ahri yet. The last ones were esp. in trouble if Ahri never used her charm until they dove her. Dive and get charmed: enjoy the gray screen, you just got outfoxed, literally. Nowadays, she's a niche pick.

I do agree that they should make her dash a basic ability, swapping out her W with R does work, but I'd put a bigger emphasis on what she's suppose to be: a seductress and temptress. To that end, swapping her E and R works. Increase the length of the charm to about 1.5 seconds, allowing Ahri to hit them for the bonus damage. If she successfully kills someone during the charm (1.5 is more than enough to 100-0 a squishy), she could potentially have a window to cast charm again, akin to Darius' R pre-16. It gives her more mobility all while making her a danger should she have R as one charm may be more than enough for the E in, W, Q burst.

Whether it's her W or E swapped, she needs to have her dash moved from her R. In a game where high mobility reigns, it'd be useful for her and can better fit the (rather uncomfortable) box they forced her into.

  18. I play her in WR, have around 60-70% win rate, I don't build burst AP but rather Battle Mage Build (Arch Staff + ROA) and i can confirm, Ahri plays like a secondary poke supp in teamfights

  19. I wanna see her kit get reworked around with her ult reworked as a basic ability but at the same time I don't know how to avoid turning her into LeBlanc with harder CC. Especially since LeBlanc is rather.. awful to play against.

  20. i think the problem with ahri is that shes use to be assassins but she cant compite with other ap asesines like katarina diana akali leblanc that do a better job and her game play dosesnt feel like an asassin it feels more like playing a lux or any other generic mage than a asassin

  21. She is very underwhelming, And it's sad. Because I have so much fun playing her. They either need to give her more damage in general and better scaling. Or make her ult charges instead of forcing you to use all three. Maybe make it so the fewer dashes you use, the lower your ult cooldown is? I dunno.

  22. I've always hated Ahri for as long as I've played the game. Fucking terrifying bitch . If I get hit by that charm then I'm basically dead. And being super mobile with good neutrals and sustain made her a nightmare to lane against. I've been told that she struggles against Sylas? I think it's quite the opposite. He has poor mana sustain, range, and dashes TO you, a champ who can charm people in front of you. I have no remorse for her…. 🙂 . And there are still so many other mages, particularly more traditional non mobile, dashy, spell casters who struggle way more then she does, In need of more power. Mages in general though have had it bad for awhile, Riot even admits this.

  23. I used to main her back in time of her popularity, almost to being one trick, but the removal of movement speed in her q is a great loss, which made me stop playing her. I miss playing her with a hit and run tactic, and actually playing her orb of deception with the use of her movement in a neutral, and not relying on her charm to get the job done

  24. I had around 200-300 games played on Ahri the day she was released up until I quit in S5. I came back in S10 and couldn't figure out for the life of me why she felt so "bad".
I played around 50 games on her before I kind of gave up and picked up other champs that felt better to play. All I remember from the old days that pressing your ult felt REALLY good.

Which granted, I think her AP scaling on her ult felt very high, especially 1-2 years after her release. So them reworking it on her very easily avoidable straight line skillshot just seems so stupid.

You didn't HAVE to land an E and a perfect QW to follow to /maybe/ kill someone back then. God forbid you're in a teamfight and you land an E on a high priority target and you get stunned or interrupted on your Q animation! That person is getting away unless your team manages to follow up. This vid summarises and explains very well why she started to fall off, so thank you!
